So basically what I'm asking is, which program is best for like a CG generalist, but is less of the Technical Director type? Someone who sort of does a little bit of everything? (Motion graphics, videogame cinematics, character animation, texturing, rigging, landscape/environment creation, etc?) I'm not concerned about learning the new software, but I'm just trying to decide, which one should I pay for to do the work that I'd want to do? Professionally (motion graphics) and as a hobby, (character animation, landscape design).

I'd also like to do ocean simulations, nothing crazy complex, but plugins like Phoenix FD are not compatible with Arnold for some reason, and I don't really have the financial overhead to pay for something like V-Ray or another 3rd party renderer, on top of a license for Max or Maya, so I'd have to stick with Arnold in both for now.Īlso, where exactly is the development going for both of these programs? Would I be wasting my time switching to Max? Or should I just stick with Maya. So I'm beginning to wonder, will I be severly limited if I never use MEL in Maya? Would I be better off switching to 3DSMax in order to take advantage of the plugins that are developed for it? Or should I just stick with Maya? Its like you can experiment a bit more freely with the modifier stack in Max, as opposed to Maya's history.Īnd all of the plugins that are available for Max is pretty enticing, especially for someone like me who doesn't really have any interest in creating scripts.Īlso, I'm not big into coding, and MEL and Python aren't really something I'm interested in learning. I do very much like how the modifier stack works in 3DSMax as opposed to Maya's history. I have been using Maya for a good while, but recently tried 3DSMax.

So I do motion graphics as a day job, but also want to get into character animation and rigging, and would like to also create videogame cut scenes/create landscapes and what not (not so much like make videogames themselves, but just the cutscene animatioms, more movie esque stuff).
